Etan Thomas
Syracuse Orange Alumn and Former NBA Player
Etan Thomas first made his name on the basketball court—but he’s never been content to stop there.
A standout center at Syracuse University, Etan was known for his shot-blocking ability, leadership, and toughness on both ends of the floor. Drafted in the first round of the 2000 NBA Draft by the Dallas Mavericks, he went on to play nine seasons in the NBA, primarily with the Washington Wizards. Over the course of his career, Etan earned a reputation as a fearless competitor and a respected voice in the locker room—both for his play and his principled stands off the court.
While Etan’s presence was felt in the paint, his impact extended far beyond the game. Even during his playing days, he spoke out on issues of race, politics, and social justice—long before it became common for athletes to do so. His willingness to speak truth to power set a precedent for the modern athlete-activist movement.
After retiring from the NBA, Etan turned his focus to writing, public speaking, and mentoring young athletes. He is the author of several books, including We Matter: Athletes and Activism, which explores the evolving role of athletes in today’s social movements. His voice continues to resonate through media appearances, op-eds, and nationwide speaking engagements.
Today, Etan Thomas stands as a powerful example of how athletes can leverage their platform to create meaningful change—on the court, in the community, and across the country.
